Visit Philippine Museums

If you’re looking at doing something different this weekend or next, why not deviate from the usual trip to the mall, club or bar and try a little culture? A trip to the museum does not have to equate ennui or torture. A little knowledge, culture and heritage will do you good. Plus, museums can be a nice place to bring your date ;) Here are some museums that DiscoverPH recommends

1. The National Museum

Let me tell you, there’s nothing more powerful than that moment when you’re right in front of the Spoliarium. The painting is just massive and it does overwhelm you with diverse but powerful emotions.

The museum can be your one establishment to go to understand our culture, history and heritage. Usual archaeological artifacts pepper the rooms and halls, indicating the richness of the Filipino culture.

There are two wings or building that make up the National museum: There’s the Museum of the Filipino People and then there’s the main building. They’re currently undergoing renovations so the entrance fee has been slashed. Their website offers a sneak peek within the museum and they even have a 360 degree experience featuring the (what else) Spoliarium.

The National Museum is located at P. Burgos St., Rizal Park, Luneta, Manila. They’re open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5pm. For further inquiries, call them at 5270278.

2. Marikina Shoe Museum

A perfect haven for every shoe-holic, the Marikina Shoe Museum was established by (then) Mayor Bayani Fernando as a definitive proof that Marikina is the Shoe Capital of the country.

The museum boasts of more than 1,000 shoes on display. A majority of them were from the Shoe Goddess herself – Madame Imelda Marcos. (Which makes me wonder if the fabled goldfish shoes are on display there). Another feature of the museum is the Shoe-per Star exhibit which showcases shoes donated by top Filipino celebrities and personalities from showbusiness, politics and sports.

The museum is located at JP Rizal st., San Roque, Marikina. Entrance fees are P50 for non Marikina residents and P20 for Marikina residents. Museum times are from Monday to Sunday,  8am – 5pm. But they do close for lunch from noon to about 1pm. For more information, call them at 646-6451

3. Ayala Museum

The last time I was at the Ayala museum was when I had to write a report on dioramas. This was when the museum was still located in Glorietta 2 and was oddly located in between a salon and a huge sports store. A lot has changed since then (for one, Glorietta 2 is being “renovated”) and the museum has found its special niche in Philippine society.

It’s a museum that showcases a lot of art and history and it’s a cafe and artsy restaurant that turns into a hotspot for socialites and who’s-who of Philippine society. You can also rent specific areas of the museum for a party or a reception. There are other rooms as well that can be used for seminars or meetings.

The Ayala Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Call them at 7577117 or visit their website to get more details.
