Nectar Wine Lounge
I believe the real travesty within the younger generation is that there are less of them that truly appreciate wine. In this day and age of alco-pops, flavored beers and mixed drinks that are in every color conceivable (one should not touch glowing neon green drinks, in my opinion), wine has taken a back seat.
For this writer, wine has such a romantic and effervescent quality that no other drink can possess. The grapes need to be raised right, cared for, nurtured, processed and bottled with such care and passion that you can almost taste it with the notes and the distinct flavor each type would have.
Fortunately, the appreciation for wine is not lost on Robi Joseph – former DJ, Artist, Commercial model, Singer and now, a Resturanteur. Nectar Restaurant and Wine Lounge is the brainchild and the tangible result of Robi’s passion for good food and good wine.
The whole premise of Nectar Restaurant and Wine Lounge is to be able to educate its patrons with the appreciation for wine. Diners are encouraged to discover their wine personality and the restaurant tries to match the best wine for you according to your results. From the data gathered with the wine, they can now also recommend a meal that would be a perfect match for your wine.
In Nectar, there are no stuffy waiters who look down on you if you can’t pronounce the wine properly. The whole point is for you to enjoy wine and a meal and come out of their doors a little bit more enlightened and even perhaps, develop a taste for wine.
It’s about having an intimate and personal experience with wine and the food. Nectar and ultimately, Robi, wants each diner to have that wonderful personal experience. This is what Wine Dining is about – and of course the gorgeous food that goes with the vast and varied wines that Nectar restaurant has.
Nectar Restaurant’s bevy of dishes may seem a bit daunting or intimidating, with its very foreign names but as Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” and with the food that Nectar has, it’s almost like having an explosion of amazing flavours in your mouth. When you can, give your compliments to Chef Mario – he is one creative and impressive chef.
Robi gave us a list of recommended dishes, at least the ones that were his favourite. A must try would be their Spanaconchitas – a wonderful mixture of spinach, Spanish chorizos and feta cheese wrapped in phyllo pastry. The garlic dip was a great touch that enhances the complex and sophisticated taste of the dish. The pumpkin soup was so light and refreshing and had a wonderful taste as they had put in cinnamon in it. Quite unusual but it works! It gave me a new appreciation for pumpkin soup. It’s almost criminal that food this delicious is priced so affordably!
As for the wine, Nectar has this “Wine Personality” test, a process that pairs your personality to the wine that you most likely will enjoy. Since I highly doubted they’d have a highly eccentric, complex and sarcastic wine, I went for what I knew I liked. I wanted a sweet wine but not a dessert wine, nothing red unless it’s pinot noir but with my migraines, I have to avoid red wines (I know, it’s depressing…). Robi had me taste some sweet wines from the wine station. The wine station is a wonderful experience as well! It allows you to have a taste of different wines without having to purchase a whole glass. It’s effective, helpful and convenient! You don’t have to feel pressed to finish a glass of wine that you don’t really like kasi nanghihinayang ka sa presyo ng isang glass ng wine, here, you can have a taste and then move on. I hope Rob will forgive me for my analogy but the best analogy I can think of is the “tikim” concept. You know the thing we do when we go to the fruit stand to buy fruits? Yung “Ale, pa tikim muna kung matamis ha?” and then pag di angkop sa panlasa mo, you won’t buy it and move on to the next kind of fruits – that’s the concept of the winestation. Seriously, you should give it a try. No, it is imperative that you give it a try.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been this passionate about a restaurant. Nectar has awakened the sleeping foodie in me. As we were saying last night, if you’re not eating at Nectar, have yourself checked because there may be something wrong with you.
I remember the movie “Sideways” and that scene where Jack, pretty much summed everything up in a rather laughable but truthful statement:
Stephanie (at Kalyra Winery, to Miles, who has just sampled the estate chardonnay she poured for him): “So what do you think?”
Miles: “Mmm. Quaffable. But, uh, far from transcendent.”
Jack: “I like it. Tastes great.”
If you like it and it tastes great to you. Wine the heck not, eh?
