Pinoy Pride – Derek Ramsay

Truth be told, there is no pure Filipino. We are an amalgamation of different races and cultures. It’s a hodge-podge and hotpot of different beliefs, looks, skin color (although there is that influx of gluta, but I digress) and culture that makes up our being Pinoy.

But just because someone isn’t pure Pinoy (because again, I stress that there’s not quantifying validation as to what a pure Pinoy is) doesn’t mean that we can’t bestow upon him or her our support and admiration. We’re starting a new category here in DiscoverPH and we’re calling it Pinoy Pride. We will feature Filipinos that have made significant and relevant contributions to our country and society. Our very first featured Pinoy Pride recipient is Mr. Derek Ramsey.

It’s impossible to not know who Derek Ramsey is. His face is all over Metro Manila – on billboards, adverts and posters. He’s also on the silver screen, on television screens, on magazines and newspapers. Most people know him as the celebrity or the sports enthusiast but what most people don’t know is how truly generous he is and how proud he is to be Pinoy.

Derek is the ambassador for Habitat for Humanity – an international organization that provides housing for those who are less fortunate and have no homes of their own. As an ambassador, he isn’t just a pretty face they put on the posters and print materials. He actually builds homes! (He had to tell Martin Nievera how to put the hollow block on properly) He also has several projects that promote local athleticism and funds most of it with his own money.

Not only is he the ambassador for Habitat for Humanity Philippines, he is also a World Vision ambassador and sends his “adopted children” from remote areas of the country to school, securing good education for them to prepare and equip them for the future.

For a celebrity, he’s quite low key when it comes to his philanthropic side but not bashful about using his celebrity status to raise awareness and encourage others to participate and join the cause.

Derek Ramsay – definitely Pinoy and proud of it!
