Things to do at a Filipino Bar
I guess it’s age starting to catch up to me when I see the young’uns going to a bar to have some sort of activity that requires more than alcohol. When I was younger, I’d be going to bar with my friends to either celebrate something or to drown my miseries in alcohol. These days, going to a bar meant you needed your full faculties therefore, you have to watch what you drink. A pretty ingenious idea too, if you ask me. But I digress… Here are some bars that offer more than just spirits and beer. They offer a really fun night!
1. CABLE CAR’s BEER PONG THURSDAY – The very first time Ive heard of beer pong was when I was in North Carolina. I met this dude who was working for the hotel I was staying at and he invited me to a party at his friend’s house. They had this ping pong table with about 6 cups on each end. The object of the game was to “shoot” your ping pong ball into the opposing team’s cups. If you were successful, they had to drink the cup (usually filled with beer. But you can opt to put wine or vodka and tonic in it, whatever your poison would be.) The team whose cups are dry loses.
Cable car has changed a lot since I last set foot in it. The memorabilia is still there but the vibe is different now. Maybe because the owners have breathed new life into it. I have to admit, I’m going to miss that grumpy old man who used to own the joint. He’s like this institution.
Cable car is located at 924 Pasay Road, Makati City. Call them up at 7527103 for more information.
2. GEEK FIGHT at LAST HOME RESTO BAR – Quiz nights are getting to be very popular with the younger generation of bar hoppers. I think that’s a great thing! We do have to enrich our minds. I’m kinda very pro quiz night because that means that people won’t step out of a bar totally drunk out of their wits but instead, they’re filled to the brim with information (never mind if it’s useful though), laughter and good memories with friends.
Last home resto bar hosts Geek Fight: Trivia Night. And this is so poplar with the nerds! I mean…the kids that love Tolkien and used to play DnD in their bedrooms. (Come on, admit that you still have that 20 sided die in that glass case…) If you were one of those kids that the bullies in high school used to gang up on, trust me, you’ll be having the last laugh in this venue.
Geek Fight: Trivia Night occurs only once a month and is usually on a Monday. Call up Last Home Resto Bar at 4127572 or text them at 09163624596 to get details and information. There’s usually a buy in of P50 for a team of 8 – 9 members. Last Home Resto Bar is located at Unit 6 Madison Square Pioneer, 4 Pioneer St., Mandaluyong City
3. ROCKEOKE NIGHTS at CENTERSTAGE – Although known to be a Karaoke bar, they do have Rokeoke nights. What exactly is rockeoke? It’s where you live your rock star dreams! Instead of the (horrible) minus one or multiplex (may multiplex pa ba?), you’re backed up by a live band who’ll play your favorite rock song and you get to sing along. Sort of like “jamming” but everyone gets a chance.
It’s not about showing off your skills as a singer, it’s about having fun and giving out “heart-felt” performances. No hecklers here. Everyone just wants to cheer you on and let you have your slice of the on stage pie.
The article is continued below this advertisement.
Rockeoke at Centerstage happens every Friday. Centerstage is located at the 2nd floor of CTTM Square, Timog Avenue, Quezon City. Call them at 9266440 or at 9268365 for more details.
4. Get a Tattoo at WILDSIDE TATTOO and BAR – Getting inked is not for everyone, but I’m thankful that the times have changed with their perception and understanding what a tattoo is.
Head on over to WILDSIDE TATTOO and BAR and have a couple of beers, listen to the band and maybe browse for a new design for your skin. This bar is known for its famous clientele (Manny Pacquiao got inked here) and its attention to detail and quality. If you don’t want to get inked, you can just sit, knock back a couple of bottles and listen to the band.
WILDSIDE TATTOO and BAR is located at Unit 2:08B Sherwood Place, Taft Avenue, Manila. Call them up for inquiries and reservations at 0917-8853338 or visit their website here.
5. SHOW OFF YOUR CREATIVITY AND TALENT – Being a tortured soul can make you write endless pages upon pages of angry or heart wrenching poetry. Why not go a step further by making it into a cathartic event by reading your creations out loud to an audience?
Mag:Net cafe in Katipunan gives poets (and writers) an opportunity to show off their literary skills at there Happy Monday’s Poetry Nights. Mag:Net is located at Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City. You can call them at 9293191 or visit their website here.
If poetry is not your thing, you can unleash your singing talent every Wednesday at Attica’s Open Mic Wednesday! If you have comedic skills, then go to Votre or stalk the Comedy Cartel for their open mic nights.
Attica is located at the A.Venue, Makati Avenue, Makati City. Call them at 729-5121
