Best Wholesale Bargain Shops

I’m a cheapskate with some stuff – blame the Ilokana in me. In this kind of an economy, you have to be smart with your purchases and make the most out of your money.

My suggestion is to go wholesale. I don’t mean start your own sari-sari store and purchase boxes upon boxes of canned goods (but it does help), just get the most bang out of our piso by buying at wholesale stores. Here are three of my favorite wholesale bargain shops.

1. UNIWIDE WAREHOUSE CLUB – When I was in high school, I’d buy my stuff here for Christmas gifts. They have unbelievable finds at unbelievable prices! You can buy your household items here at dirt cheap prices! Wine glasses for 8 pesos each, beautiful plates and serving dishes are sold somewhere between 20 to 28 pesos, clear decorative bottles for 18 to 30 pesos and toys that range from 5 pesos above. This place has been my secret for years.

I found a really cute Starbucks umbrella stand (that looks like a venti cup) for only 50 pesos! I also got the kids’ ceramic houses (for their train set) for 50 pesos – 80 pesos. I saw the same ceramic houses in a hobby shop that was selling them for 300 pesos.

Since it’s a warehouse, don’t expect too much. The place is quite dark, musty and dusty. You’re not paying for the ambiance anyway. Bring wet wipes with you as the items are quite dusty. Don’t come to the place wearing your best malling outfit either or you’ll stick out like a sore thumb. A shirt, jeans and flip flops are the best.

Uniwide Warehouse Club has appliances, furniture, home decor, lighting fixtures, home items, gifts, novelty items, bed and bath supplies, pinens, kitchen stuff, garden items, crafts, school and office supplies, toys and fashion items.

Uniwide Warehouse Club has branches in Sucat, Paranaque, Alabang-Zapote Rd in Las Pinas, Grace Park in Caloocan, in Malolos, Bulacan and in Gulod, Novaliches.

The article is continued below this advertisement.

2. PUREGOLD – Puregold started the wholesale business just recently. It’s a great place to procure groceries en masse for your sari-sari store. The prices are competitive enough and though it’s crowded most of the time, most of their branches are well lit and air-conditioned.

Aside from groceries, they also sell furniture, clothes, toys, electronics, baby stuff and household items. Most of the electronics though aren’t the regular branded ones you can see in retail shops. These are either Taiwanese, Korean or Chinese made – that’s why the prices are very competitive.

The clothes that they sell are made locally and some of them are really actually good (good like the ones being sold on facebook as Koren fashion). I also love the fact that they have that Chinese restaurant, Luk Foo in every branch. I can rest and eat there after I’ve shopped.

3. MAKRO – Makro is now part of the SM kingdom. It is one of my kids’ favorite places to go to because of the sheer expanse of the place. The store in Las Pinas is actually about 7,500 square meters! So, yeah, my kids can run around without me freaking if they’re going to break something or snag displays accidentally.

Makro used to be a membership only warehouse club but since SM Prime Holdings bought it out, they now accept “walk-ins”. I personally purchase my baking and cooking stuff here as they have the huge packets and other ready to bake mixes that are made by San Miguel Corp.

What I don’t like about Makro (and other SM stores) is that when you ask them about a product you want to buy, they have absolutely no idea what or where it is. You spend so much time going around and asking different sales people about it and you end up wasting your time in frustration or they “suggest” (strongly) that you go with another brand that’s a bit more pricey than your intended purchase.

Also, Makro has the “until there are stocks” policy. If you want an item and it’s available and you’ve tested it, my suggestion is to get it now. Otherwise you’ll be disappointed to find out that there are no more items in stock.
