5 Different things to do in Manila
They say that Manila is just a city – there’s nothing to do but to go to the shopping monoliths and watch movies or just dine out or…you get the point.
One of the reasons why I put up this website was to get rid of the frustrating situation wherein you have some friends over or you have guests coming in from elsewhere and you have absolutely no idea what to do or where to go. I mean, do you really want to take them to the usual spots like the mall or a club? Yeah…didn’t think so. So, here are 5 different things to do in Manila that you can do this weekend or next month when your cousins from California come over next month.
1. FREE SALSA LESSONS – And no, not the nachos kind of salsa. Hop on over to Makati to get some free salsa lessons from a certified instructor (award winning at that). Visit La Dolce Vita Bar and Restaurant every Thursdays and Saturdays to learn how to kick some heels and flick some wrists correctly. Courtesy of Salsa Fanatics, learn how to dance the salsa while moving with the music a live band plays.
Salsa nights are on Thursdays and Saturdays at La Dolce Vita Bar and Restaurant. Come a little before 10PM to get a table and a good place for space. La Dolce Vita Bar and Restaurant is located at 41 Polaris st., Bel-Air, Makati. Call them up at 8995611 or (Salsa Fanatics) 09169264007.

2. SMART PEOPLE ARE SEXY – The problem with drinking with your friends is that you tend to get a little stupid sometimes. Why not try to show your smarts by going to Quiz Nights? Have a couple of beers at Murphy’s Pub while you answer a couple of science questions. Murphy’s Pub has its quiz nights every Tuesdays at 10PM. It’s really more fun to do this as a group.
Another bar that offers quiz nights is 121 bar. Let the rewards of your incessant search for world and entertainment trivia be reaped here! Show off your smarts by getting the most number of correct questions. Fair warning though as some of them are really difficult and some of the regular patrons can get really serious with this.
Murphy’s bar is located at Citiland Condominiums III Bldg., 105 VA Rufino st. corner Esteban st, Legazpi Village, Makati. 3. LEARN HOW TO DANCE WITH A POLE – Every single person I ask about this would always tell me that it is a strenuous workout. So, it’s actually their dancing that keeps those women looking that hot. Demi Moore didn’t lie! (Because of that flop of a movie of hers…Striptease? Get it?…err…never mind)
Peak performance will teach you how to strip dance and pole dance like a regular…independent contractor working for cash. If this kind of dancing isn’t your cup of tea, then you can opt to learn the ancient art of belly dancing. Peak Performance is located at the second floor of the McGwen Bldg, 16 Don A. Roces Avenue, Quezon City. You can call them up at 4133466.

4. RELAX. WATCH A MOVIE -But not just any movie – rent a classic! As a proud Pinoy, I have watched a lot of classic Filipino films and not just because it was required in school but because it’s our heritage. Watch the masterpieces of Lino Broka, Ishmael Bernal, Danny Zialcita, Mario O’Hara and Mike De Leon at the comfort of your home. Trust me, you can’t download these hard to find films. So, how can you get your hands on a copy? Drive to West Avenue to rent FPJ, early Dolphy and Sharon movies. Video 48 is a video store, a quasi museum and a novelty store.

5. BE AN OENOPHILE – Why don’t you trade your beer for wine this time? Visit the country’s very first wine museum slash bed and breakfast aptly named The Wine Museum. Every first and third Thursdays of the month, they also have wine tasting at 7PM. Make sure to call them up to book first as it’s quite popular.
You can also stay in one of their 9 bedrooms in their quaint bed and breakfast for a really low price. (Insanely cheap, actually. And for the rooms, it’s really insanely cheap!)
The Wine Museum is located at 2253 aurora Blvd., Pasay City. From EDSA (coming from the north), take the fly over that goes to the domestic terminal and at the drop, you can see the establishment on your right side. Call them at 2394278 / 8535894 / 8317951

Lemon Tree Inn hotel – It’s a very small hotel, almost like an inn if it weren’t for the beautifully decorated rooms. They only hae 10 rooms so make sure that you book earlier! It’s near a lot of the establishments and hospitals like St. Luke’s Medical Center at E.Rodriguez.
Berjaya Manila Hotel - Affordable and convenient, the Berjaya hotel is located near Makati’s business and commercial district. They boast of clean rooms and friendly staff.

Hi, Ian. I really like this post. Most travelers to the Philippines skip Manila and head on straight to various sand and sea destinations. Spending time at the beach is wonderful (especially as the beaches in the Philippines are some of the loveliest in the world) but it’s a shame that the charms of Manila are often overlooked.
Your article gives a different side to Manila that tells travelers, “stay a while longer.”
